Question:
The floor design for an industrial building calls for a 15-deep glulam beam to be supported on the ledge of a masonry wall. The connection between the wall and the glulam beam will be achieved by a steel base anchored into the masonry and using a single 3/4" bolt located 3 in from the bottom of the beam and a lateral restraint clip at the top of the beam. Two possible details for this connection are shown below. In the first detail, the top clip does not incorporate a bolt. In the second detail, the top clip incorporates a 1/2’’ bolt located 3 in from the top of the beam.
a) Considering that the moisture content will be 19% at the time of installation and will reduce to 9% in service, which connection detail would you recommend? Justify your answer with the help of sketches.
b) For the second connection detail, determine the minimum size of both holes in order to avoid any potential shrinkage problem. Round off your answer to the next largest 1/8 in.
