Split the string and trim whitespace in Java.

I'm very new to Java. I wanna split a string so that they are separated only by ' ' and '\t', and then trim start and end whitespace characters.

For example, on splitting " word\f\t", the desired output is "word\f". Also, on splitting " word\t\tcount ", the desired output is a list of "word", "count".

My code is as follow. But it does not work. (the text below is assumed to be the input). Can you help me with it?

List words = new ArrayList<>(); 

String[] tmpWords = text.trim().split(" +|\\t+"); for (String eachWord : tmpWords) { words.add(eachWord); } return words;
