Standard deviation measures the average deviation from the mean. For example, if the average score of a quiz is 70 and standard deviation is 10, a student who scores 80 is 1 standard deviation above the mean while a student who scores 90 is 2 standard deviations above the mean. A student who scores 60 is 1 standard deviation below the mean while a student who scores 50 is 2 standard deviations below the mean.
