State Newton's first law of motion. Explain how Newton's first law of motion is consistent with the principle of conservation of linear momentum. A particle of mass m travelling with a velocity u makes a head-on elastic collision with another particle of mass M which is at rest. If m<M, show that the particles with mass m moves in the direction opposite to its initial velocity after collision. A particle of mass m travelling at a speed u collides head-on with an identical particle which is at rest. The two particles coalesce after collision and move with the same velocity. (a) Calculate the common velocity of the particles after collision. (b) Find the ratio of the kinetic energy of the system after collision to the kinetic energy before collision. (c) What happens to the loss in kinetic energy? State Newton's first law of motion. Explain how Newton's first law of motion is consistent with the principle of conservation of linear momentum.
