Coffee Consumption in the United States

What is the state of coffee consumption in the United States today? According to a recent Gallup poll of 1,009 adults living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, sixty-four percent of adults in the United States drink one or more cups of coffee per day, and regular coffee drinkers consume an average of around three cups per day. While around 50% of those in the 18- to 34-year-old bracket are coffee drinkers, the figure is much higher (74%) for adults over 55. While there are fewer coffee drinkers in the lower-income brackets, those who do drink coffee tend to drink more (3.8 cups per day) than coffee drinkers in higher-income brackets (2.4 cups per day).

Is there a difference between men and women in U.S. coffee consumption? According to the poll, 62% of men drink one or more cups of coffee per day as compared to 66% of women. The average number of cups per day among coffee drinkers is 2.6 for men and 2.9 for women. Geographically, 70% of people in the East drink one or more cups per day versus 65% in the Midwest, 63% in the South, and 62% in the West.
