You are an Operations Analyst at Georgian Chemical, a Barrie-based company which producesseveral inorganic chemicals for industrial use (note: this is a fictitious company). You havebeen asked to use statistical process control techniques to assess a potential product qualityissue. You will need to prepare and interpret and to provide a written report explaining yourapproach and your conclusions
MARKING METHODOLOGY / EXPECTATIONSProjects will be marked based on: Quality, appropriateness, completeness, and accuracy of the analytical tools used.
Cohesiveness and clarity of the report (i.e. conclusions clearly articulated, insightfulinterpretations and descriptions of the information requested).
Spelling and grammatical correctness (in Canadian English).
Overall professionalism of submitted work (easy to understand, visually-appealing, etc).
Recently Georgian Chemical customers have complained regarding the sulphate content ofone of the companys products. Every customer allows some sulphate content, buttheoretically there should be none. The usual customer specification is 90 parts per million(ppm) sulphate. The quality control department at Georgian Chemical feels that there is noproblem with sulphate content, which has been averaging approximately 50 ppm. Theproduction department estimates that a substantial investment would be required to lowerthe amount of this contaminant. These two departments, after consulting with the marketingdepartment and customers, suggest that a control chart be set up to monitor sulphatecontent.
The September data is to be used to establish control limits for this process (note: fromhistorical data, Georgian Chemical knows that the process standard deviation is 12.87 ppm). With the control limits in place, Georgian continues to monitor the process for the first 10days of Octobe.
Your Tasks1. Prepare a written report on sulphate levels at Georgian Chemical. The report shouldinclude:
A clear description of the issue being evaluated.
A clear description on the approach used to analyze the issue.
A clear response to the question: does the process remain in-control in October?
Commentary to support your conclusion.2. Please note this additional guidance:
Your report should be prepared as a standalone document, meaning your analysis andconclusions should be complete
