Land Use Types: Apartment Complexes, Churches, School, Fast Food,
Restaurants, Retail Shoppes, Gas Stations, Transit Stations, Parking Garage, Truck
Stops, or Government Office. Each land use type will have different times of day
which activity occurs the most, try to identify that, either AM PM or afternoon.
Step : Observe the Trip Activity at the Selected Location
The objective is to monitor and collect data on all entry and exits from the land
use types being studied. The activity will be broken down by persons and
transportation mode. How many people visited the location and the
transportation mode they arrived in by minute increments, for hour
consecutive time period. The second observation can occur on a different day at
the same time or a different time depending on your schedule, preferably in the
AM or PM for weekdays or on the weekend. The modes should differentiate
between walking, biking, passenger vehicle, transit, and trucks axles or more if
possible. Understanding who is using that land use is insightful. Individuals or
people in groups, age considerations, gender are helpful observations.
Step : Examine and Compare with ITE Trip Rates
After you collect the data, you will compare it with ITE trip rates and attempt to
understand what differences exist if any with the ITE rates.
Step : Document Results in a Memo
Put together a to page memo describing in detail the land use type being
examined, its size, access points, environment that it situated in Document the
times, weather, and any other pertinent information about the data collection
efforts. Compare the data with ITE trip rates provided by the instructor and
identify any differences or similarities that you may observe. Maps, graphics, and
tables would be helpful.
