structural component design

Based on the various STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS we have discussed this week in our lecture material as well as our in class exercises, select one that interests you or has some application in your world. It can be any concrete, wood, steel, or other product. Think outside the box! Once you have selected the component, you probably have already thought about how this product can be used. Complete this assignment with your selection. It can be done in either a word document or ppt format and should be submitted online once complete. Follow these steps/outline and include the required elements in your project as specified.

1. (1 and 2 together) Selection of Component: What did you pick? Is there a certain manufacturer or organization that provided the information you used? State and supply a web link to the information. (For Example - hollowcore precast concrete slab).
2. (1 and 2 together) Design a situation or condition for use of this component. Present the problem with pictures and words (hand sketches or CADD sketch) that fully describe the 'problem" and also state all of the criteria you are using such as load, deflection criteria, etc. (For example, maybe you decided to design a header for a garage door opening; you would draw this in plan or elevation, show the span of the opening, state the loads criteria, etc.). Basically, someone should be able to look at your sketch and notes and be able to "solve" the problem.
3. Solve the problem. Go to the charts for this product and select the winner. Include a copy of the chart (snip it from online) you used and highlight the solution based on your criteria and selection. Clearly identify your selection.
4. Describe any alternatives-is there another product line with the same manufacturer, could you relax the deflection standards somewhat, can you reduce the span or increase the strength of the material. Life is about choices - so what other choices did you have?
