Instructions to Student | General Instructions: In these units you are required to demonstrate that you have worked with three (3) people with mental health issues and co-existing needs in ways that support individual empowerment and recovery. Attached to this assessment task are three (3) individual scenarios. This task requires you to read the individual scenarios and respond to the questions attached for each scenario. If you are working intensively with service users with Mental Health and co-existing needs in your work and/or vocational placement, you may choose to consult people from your workplace. However you must consult with your workplace supervisor and TAFE assessor regarding this option.
Information / Materials provided: Questions are supplied with this assessment task with a learner guide to assist students with their research.

| Number of Attempts: You will receive up to two (2) attempts at this assessment task as long as these are submitted within the study period for this unit. Should your 1st attempt be unsatisfactory (U), your teacher will provide feedback and discuss the relevant sections / questions with you and will arrange a due date for the submission of your 2nd attempt. Person 1 Mary
Mary is 19 years of age. From the age of 10 she lived in out of home care on a long term guardianship order to the Chief Executive. Since leaving care, she has resided in supported accommodation provided by a Community Housing service. You are employed as a support worker in the community housing service and have recently commenced working with Mary.
Mary has been exposed to multiple developmentally adverse interpersonal traumas throughout her childhood including; witnessing and surviving both physical and emotional abuse from her parents and being sexually abused.
Mary has been diagnosed with a moderate intellectual disability. Her IQ is 73;
She has noticeable developmental delays in speech and motor skills;
She can communicate in basic, simple ways;
She is able to learn basic health and safety skills;
She can complete self-care activities;
She can travel alone to nearby familiar places.
She has been diagnosed by a Psychologist as having disorganised attachment disorder and experiences emotional dysregulation and has a negative self-image.
Marys father is from the Torres Strait. He has not been in Marys life for the last 9 years and his whereabouts are unknown.
Marys mother has a history of drug and alcohol abuse and mental health issues, including periods of hospitalisation. For the first 10 years of Marys life she spent time living with numerous relatives and friends when her mother was unable to care for her. It was whilst being cared for by others that Mary, at the age of 8, was sexually abused by a 30 year old male family member. This continued for 2 years. Mary disclosed the abuse to a teacher which resulted in the matter being investigated. The male was charged with sexual abuse of a minor. It was at this time The Department of Child Safety became involved and Mary subsequently went into care.
Over the last 9 years Mary has engaged in drug and alcohol misuse (marijuana, tobacco). Mary left school early before completing year 10. She has remained unemployed although engages in prostitution at times to earn money. She frequently leaves her residence for days at a time without notifying support staff. Mary regularly self-harms by cutting and the scars are visible on her forearms.

Nikau is 26 years of age and is a New Zealand Maori with dual citizenship in Australia.
He has been diagnosed by a Psychiatrist with Schizoaffective disorder and is on medication for his condition
He has psychotic episodes in which he experiences delusions and hallucinations that disrupt his perception, thoughts, emotions and behaviour
Nikau has a history of physical violence
He engages frequently in drug and alcohol abuse (marijuana, ICE, cocaine, speed, heroin and tobacco, whatever is available at the time).
From the age of 14 he was heavily involved with local law enforcement and was in youth detention. He often spent time on the streets, homeless or sleeping rough. When involved in fights, he would bite into a glass bottle to cut his mouth, and spit blood, saliva and glass at his opponent, or the police.
As he was a perpetrator of domestic and family violence, his wife, mother and siblings would often have bruises and black eyes; his wife once had a broken arm from him twisting it, as well as frequent cigarette burns. He has spent the last 12 months in prison as a result of his violence that was directed at his wife and police at the time. His behaviour is notorious, and there have been many local press reports about him.
It is said that Nikau hates anyone in a position of authority.
On his release from prison four weeks ago, Nikau was placed in transitional housing on a 12 month conditional release order. The following conditions apply to his order:
He cannot leave the state without permission and cannot travel overseas;
The consumption of alcohol or use of any illicit drug is prohibited;
He is subjected to random drug tests;
He must participate in a community-based rehabilitation program;
Must report regularly to a community corrections officer;
Notify community corrections of any change of address or employment;
Not have any contact with his wife, mother or siblings.
Your role:
You are employed as a support worker in the anger management rehabilitation program.

Person 3 BarryBarry is 17 years of age. He lives in a local youth hostel. You are employed as a youth worker in the hostel and have been working with Barry for the last six weeks. Barry often spends time loitering around the streets and sleeping rough. He has not had any contact with his family for the last 2 years when he ran away from home. Barry and his father had a strained relationship and according to Barry his father would often call him a dirty poof. Barrys mother would not support him.
Barry dropped out of school at the end of grade 9 and has not returned. Barry is homosexual and has had 1 significant relationship in the past that ended abruptly two weeks ago. Barry has difficulty talking about his sexuality and often gets bullied by the other residents in the youth hostel.
He engages in drug and alcohol abuse (marijuana);
He is very shy and lacks self-confidence;
He often feels overwhelmed, guilty, miserable and sad;
He has trouble sleeping;
Does not eat very much as his appetite is minimal;
