A recent campaign by organized labor unions has brought the issue of executive compensation into the public eye. Media coverage of executive compensation concerns has been extensive over several weeks. This high coverage has highlighted public concerns of the high level pay of top executives.
The publicity has caused some turmoil at oakwood lawns. For the first time, the companys CEO pay is featured as an example of perceived excess in the executive suite and the media mentioned that oakwood lawns is among the highest paid in the country. Moreover, several field managers have been in touch with the HR director, to report that employees are outraged at the rate of pay of the CEO. The HR director knows that such a rage would lead to low employee morale and other problems; the company has 15,000 employees.
The union targeted oakwood lawns because it is a big company with some financial problems. The CEO gets a large annual salary, add in a bonus, stock awards, retirement benefits and other benefits. Oakwood CEOs annual salary is $975,000 with a total compensation package of around $10 million a year, while the average technician in the country is around $28,000 annually. This disparity is a real concern.
