SUBJECT : APPLIED PROBABILITY AND STATISTIC
You address some questions that interest you with the statistical methodology in Topic 1(Descriptive
Statistics) or Topic 2(Correlation and Regression). You choose your own topic; you decide how to collect
the data and do the analysis. You are required to choose only ONE of the topics. You may follow the
general steps below.
Topic 1: Descriptive Statistics General Outline
i) Introduction: Identify the objectives or problem statement
You must clearly state the problem or issue and the objectives of the study.
ii) Decide on the method of data collection
You are required to use secondary data only. Provide a brief description about your dataset
(Source of dataset, URL, description of variables in the data set and sample size).
iii) Classify and summarise the data
Use Microsoft Excel or any appropriate statistical tools to organize, classify and summarise the
data according to their characteristics or attributes.
iv) Present, analyse and interpret the data
Use Microsoft Excel or any appropriate statistical tools to perform the descriptive statistics for
the data including measures of central tendency and measure of dispersion.
Plot the suitable graph and determine the shape of data distribution. Give your comment on
your findings.
Which of the measures of central tendency do you think best describes your data? Why? Do your
analyses support your expected findings? Explain.
v) Conclude your study.
What conclusions, if any, do you believe you can draw as a result of your study? If the results
were not what you are expected, what factors might explain your results? What did you learn from
the project about the population you studied? What did you learn about the research variables?
What did you learn about the specific statistical analysis you conducted?
Topic 2: Correlation & Regression General Outline
i) Introduction: Identify the objectives or problem statement
You must clearly state the problem or issue and the objectives of the study.
ii) Decide on the method of data collection
You are required to collect the secondary data. Provide a brief description about your dataset
(Source of dataset, URL, description of variables in the data set and sample size).
iii) Classify and summarise the data
Use Microsoft Excel or any appropriate statistical tools to identify the statistical procedures you
used to analyze your data. Give relevant design details (e.g., which variable was selected as the
explanatory variable, and which the response variable? Why? What type of correlation did you
expect? And so on.).
iv) Present, analyse and interpret the data
Use Microsoft Excel or any appropriate statistical tools to perform the analysis for the data.
Report the results of your analysis; include items below.
a) Scatter plot with a graph of the regression line
b) Value of the correlation coefficient r and interpretation of its meaning
c) Equation of the regression line
d) An example of a prediction using the regression equation
e) Discussion of the slope of the regression line and its meaning
f) Value of R2 for the regression model and interpretation of its meaning
Interpret the results of your statistical analysis in the context of your original research question. Do
your analyses support your expected findings? Explain.
v) Conclude your study.
What conclusions, if any, do you believe you can draw as a result of your study? If the results
were not what you expected, what factors might explain your results? What did you learn from the
project about the population you studied? What did you learn about the research variables? What
did you learn about the specific statistical analysis you conducted?
