During my field placement, I had the opportunity to observe and engage with various communication styles, including direct, collaborative, non-verbal, and assertive approaches. Effective communication is vital for any agency, as it serves as the foundation for building strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and co-workers. There are numerous ways to connect, whether through face-to-face conversations, emails, or group discussions.

I noticed that occasionally, clients require a safe space to share their thoughts and feelings. In those situations, we prioritize active listeningtaking the time to absorb their concerns, which allows us to summarize and reflect back what we hear. This practice not only makes clients feel heard and valued but also fosters trust in the therapeutic relationship.

To maintain an open line of communication within our entire team, we encourage an environment where clients and colleagues alike can freely ask questions, share their perspectives, and contribute ideas as well as progress notes. For example, we conduct weekly staff meetings. During these sessions, we collaboratively review cases, discuss challenges, and brainstorm strategies, all in the pursuit of providing our clients with the highest quality of care.

Upon reflecting on my experiences, I have also received constructive feedback from my field instructor, which has contributed significantly to my development. I am pleased to report that I have successfully built a meaningful connection with my client. This relationship has boosted my confidence and equipped me with essential skills to work effectively with future clients.
