Supermax prisons is a sensitive and controversial topic to the public, due to rehabilitation, mental health issues, and the expensive operation costs. Corrections is not understood by most people that are not in the career. As someone who works in corrections, I wanted to learn about them and understand why supermax prisons exist. Super max prisons are designed for safety and security and to house the most dangerous and violent offenders. Most of these offenders serve long sentences and have a history of violence, gang related activities, staff assaults, and escapes. Supermax prisons consist of a small cell with little to no outside contact, with twenty-three hours in the cell and one hour out of cell. These inmates do not have almost no access to education or recreational activities and are in handcuffs and escorted by several staff members when leaving cell (Jona, 2018). In a correctional management perspective these supermax prisons ensure a safer environment for staff, inmates, and the public.
