Switched designed backbone is evolving into a newer design. These days Spine and Leaf design are gaining more support and momentum. With the introduction of Virtual Port Channel Cisco was able to do away with Spanning Tree Protocol that is a central part of layer 2 domain and VLANS. STP kept the network loop free and efficient. However, with the new Spine and Leaf design the three tiered switched networks are shrunk into a two tier layer 2 domains. In a Spine a Leaf design, the Access layer and Distribution layer are bundled together and all Access layer switches are connected to the each Core switches to create efficient network designs. In a Spine and Leaf design all the access layers switches are one hop away from each Core layer switches
