SYSTEM ENGINEERING PROCESS - SEMESTER PROJECT

Select a product system of your choice. A homework will be posted to obtain approval for the topic to ensure it is appropriate.

Work through the technical processes to develop your system. Where performing certain activities is not feasible, describe the plan that is to be used. For example, you do not have to run an analytical simulation in the system analysis process, but you do need to describe what analysis activities you plan to perform and why.

At a minimum you are to accomplish the activities within each technical process listed below:

1. Business or Mission Analysis Process
   • Define the problem or opportunity space
   • Characterize the solution space
   • Evaluate alternative solution classes
   • Identify major stakeholders
   • Define the operational environment
   • Define the lifecycle
   • Define the business requirements (minimum of 3)
2. Stakeholder Needs & Requirements Definition Process
   • Identify other stakeholders
   • Define stakeholder requirements (minimum of 5)
3. System Requirements Definition Process
   • Define the remainder of the system requirements, identifying the traceability to mission, stakeholder, environment, etc. (minimum of 20)
   • For 5 of your requirements define how they will be verified and validated
   • Develop 3 TPMs that should be monitored and explain why
4. Architecture Definition Process
   • Identify external interfaces
   • Create a functional flow block diagram for the highest level 1 function, two level 2 functional flow block diagram, and a level 3 functional flow block diagrams
5. Design Definition Process
   • Develop a product hierarchy for your system
   • Identify at least 1 design enabler
   • Identify at least 15 design characteristics for various system elements within your hierarchy. Show traceability.
6. System Analysis Process
   • Explain what analysis will be performed throughout your system development
   • What tools and methods will be used
7. Implementation Process
   • Discuss what methods will be used to implement your product system
8. Integration Process
   • What methods will be used for integration and how do they relate to implementation and system analysis
9. Verification Process
   • What activities are going to performed and how do they relate to requirements
10. Transition Process
    • Describe how you are going to transition your developed system in to the operational environment
11. Validation Process
    • What activities are going to performed and how do they relate to requirements
12. Operation Process
    • Describe how the system is going to be used in the operational environment. (very similar to work performed in business or mission analysis)
    • Describe at least one error found during operation that needs to be fed back to the development team
13. Maintenance Process
    • What types of maintenance will be performed throughout operation and why. What is the benefit?
    • What enablers are needed
14. Disposal Process
    • What will happen to your product system at the end of its lifecycle
