In an attempt to achieve his aspiration, he had been applying for promotion positions at Plant Alpha for the past three years as he believed he should get a foot in the door at head office. Unfortunately, he had not been shortlisted for any of the positions he applied for. Some three weeks ago, he had applied for a team leader position at Plant Alpha and he was eagerly waiting for the invitation to an interview.
However, two days ago, Simon overheard a conversation between Lesego Nkomo and Mary Whitfield in the kitchen. Lesego was telling Mary that she was invited for an interview for the same position he applied for. It is three days later, and he has still not received an invitation. He is extremely disappointed. Finally, Simon decided it is time to discuss his frustration with the HR Director at Plant Alpha. He phoned the HR Director, Vijay Singh. Vijay answered the phone and Simon (rather aggressively) started to explain the reason for his call and his disappointment.
Vijay knows Simon fairly well and is surprised by his attitude and tone. He stayed calm and said: Simon, you are one of the best performing employees at Plant Gemma and you are part of the talent pool. However, you need to be patient and continue to learn and gain experience. Keep in mind that all employees cannot always get what they want. After an awkward silence, Simon thanked Vijay for his time and cut the conversation short. Simon is now angry about Vijays response. He was caught off-guard. He continued to reflect on the following questions: Why do I not get shortlisted for positions at Plant Alpha? When will I ever get an opportunity to work at Plant Alpha? How is it possible that Lesego can get an interview and I dont? What is this talent pool all about?
Early the next morning, Simon sends his resignation letter to his line manager, Tom Brown and copied Vijay Singh.
