Taninder was born and raised in a rural town in India and lived there until she was 18. Her parents arranged a marriage for her to a man already living in Australia. Taninder was not happy about the marriage and wanted to go to university however she did not want to disobey her parents. She was married and moved to Australia on a temporary visa. Her husband was not unkind to Taninder at first, but Taninder soon discovered that her choices were more limited than she had hoped. He told her that she was unable to work legally and would need to work for cash for his brother-in-law. He also told Taninder that she could not legally have a bank account, so the money would be paid into his account. However, he assured her that all of the money would be used for them both and would cover the living expenses. Taninder thought this sounded reasonable as she knew it was the man's job to manage the money, though she was initially disappointed that she would have less independence and rights that she first thought. She believed Australia was a country where men and women had more equality and had hoped that her life would be quite different from that of her mother's. As the year progressed, Taninder felt more pressure to work, and yet was still expected to do all of the household chores. At times Taninder had asked her husband for money to buy some things she needed, but she continued to be paid her small allowance which was only enough for essentials. Taninder also noticed that he would get very angry at her for the slightest things. He would complain about her cooking, her cleaning, and forced her to keep a very strict schedule. She would tell her friends, 'He is right to get angry at me for this, it is my fault, I am a terrible housewife and never learnt to cook from my mother...but I just wish that he would be less aggressive with me'. She was not allowed to leave the house unless it was to go to work, or to shop for food. On one occasion Taninder was very ill and desperately needed medical attention. Her husband told her that her visa would not allow her to seek medical attention. This seemed untrue to Taninder, as other women at her work were on the same visa and they seemed to have a lot more freedom. Taninder felt that her situation was growing more hopeless, and the feelings of strength and worth that she once had were quickly fading away. Taninder also experienced sexual assault on a regular basis, although Taninder believed it was her duty as a wife to cater for the sexual needs of her husband. She was required to have sex with her husband whenever he demanded it and if she tried to refuse him, he would verbally and physically degrade her. When she realised she was pregnant, she was initially happy as she felt the sexual abuse would stop. However, it only intensified, and she experienced a miscarriage. Using guidance for record keeping found in the policy provided in the learner guide, record and report any risk to Taninder and/or to your own personal safety in the space below.
