Introduction

This report was written at the request of the Human Resources Director in order to investigate the reasons why employees are coming late to work. The information in this report is based on a three-day investigation project by four members of the HR Department. They checked attendance records and interviewed late-comers. Recommendations are made to decrease the effects of coming late to work.

Background

Time and discipline are the two important factors which drives our company. The success of any company is the outcome of the efforts that is put down by its team members. Recently, since January 2018, it has been found that the employees have started taking the office timings lightly. There has been a sudden increase in the late comers.

Findings

First of all, 30% of the staff who were interviewed are now living in the outskirts of the town. They reported that rent within the area around our offices has increased in about 40% towards the end of 2017. Most of them made the decision to move to cheaper areas at the beginning of 2018. 10% of the employees need around a 30-minute ride before reaching the offices.

When the team interviewed the late-comers, 20% of them reported that they now have a child that goes to primary school. They have reported that public buses are not available and that the cost of a private bus is around 300$ a month. They said that is more convenient for them to drop their children on the way to work. However, primary schools in town start at 8:00 in the morning; just 15 minutes before they have to be in the offices.

Lastly, the majority of the staff complained about the lack of proper coffee shops around the area. The canteen inside the building offer pre-packaged food and soft drinks only. Many of the staff members pointed out that they are conscious about their health and diet. Many of them reported that they pass by coffee shops at least 3 times a week to ensure having a healthy fulfilling meal before coming to work.
