Your good work in this area has been noticed and you have been given further tasks to complete. This

involves vertical support elements of the structure.

a$)$ A column of length $5$ m has one end fixed and one end free. The column is to carry an axial

compressive load of $25$ kN $.$

i$)$ Select a suitable I$-$section from standard section tables for Grade $43$ steel

which has the lowest possible weight.

ii$)$ Comment to justify your selection.

b$)$ A rectangular section beam $(40$ mm wide by $100$ mm tall$)$ has been selected to be used for the beam

shown in Task $3$a$)$ above.

i$)$ Determine the maximum stress in the beam.

ii$)$ Comment to justify if the selection is suitable or otherwise.
