Task Format: Up to three visual system maps
Task Objective: To understand a specific problem, its complexity, and its linkages with other social and environmental issues.
Task Specifics: Use input from class and research to develop a system map of a complex social issue. The system maps should include:
Historical events, laws, and contextual issues that caused the issue you are focused on
The interconnected and cause/effect relationships between the issue you focus on and other current social and environmental problems.
The issue's current and potential future impact on humans and the environment if the issue remains present.
Visually depict the problem as a system (not a mind map) using nodes and links to show how this invisible system works explicitly
Evaluation Criteria:
The system map includes historical events, current intersecting issues, and current and future issues caused by the core issue
The visual design of the system map provides a blueprint of this issue and how it works to perpetuate the negative externalities it causes.
The system map visually articulates the required information with text explanations kept to a minimum.
The system map includes data, stats, and research that support the inclusion of nodes and links within it.
System maps include a comprehensive key that explains the icons, arrows, and colors used in the map
System map is annotated with references that support them. A combination of theoretical research (Journal Articles), statistics and data (UN SDG Tracking Data, Bureau of Statistics Data), and practice-based evidence (Interviews, Books or Podcasts with Social Entrepreneurs) are expected.
