Every TCP segment has a unique sequence number, which allows the receiving host to keep track of all the incoming segments so it can reassemble the original application message. Occasionally, two segments might arrive carrying the same sequence number, resulting in a duplicate segment?

Note: if the first segment is lost or is received with errors and has to be dropped, the retransmitted segment is NOT a duplicate.
