Technology and digitisation has become an integral part or key success factor of any business and more so during the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic has taught all of us that simply having good food is not enough to ensure business success. Business owners had to resort to new technology and innovative ideas to gain competitive edge and simply survive during this trying pandemic period. Digitalisation comes at a cost but it is a great investment. Kentucky Fried Chicken is always full of customers queuing for food especially during peak hours. Covid- 19 has hit most businesses hard but has also created opportunities for businesses to become innovative and compete with other technologically advanced businesses in the world. Industry leaders are constantly coming up with new digital solutions to make running a restaurant easier, and more profitable. These solutions were once idealised dreams for businesses but has become necessities. I have identified a few digital ideas that can be utilised during the pandemic as a survival mechanism and beyond that will enhance the service provided by Kentucky Fried Chicken; Scheduling software; software that is able to generate and distribute a weekly schedule to all employees it utilises historical staffing patterns and forecasted sales to avoid over or under staffing. The software assists with shift swaps, reduce overtime and ensure profitability. Digital menus and Kiosks; where customers can see a live demonstration of their dishes, discounts, what is included in the ingredients, calorie content, etc. Menus that can be sanitised after each use when customers visit the restaurant instead of holding a menu card they can select their food by using a digital app. Staff can be trained without the risks and costs of conducting normal training sessions, staff can take a tour of the restaurant, watch other employees on the job, test their skills with simulation games, etc. Digital inventory tracking system and purchasing tool: owners are able to submit and view inventory at a click of a button. The system can be customized for counting of each product. This will assist to calculate how much inventory they have based on items sold and address waste and theft issues. An automated purchasing system can also be linked to it. Digital table/ reservation: To avoid overcrowding in the restaurant, customers are able to book reservations to seating arrangements according to size of a group and time estimates.
