Tegan & Sara limited have been awarded mining rights by the government of Cassiopeia over the Underwood Mountain Chain. The Underwood Mountains are rich in aluminum and copper deposits; conservative estimates place the total worth of minerals in the Mountain at approximately 10 billion US dollars. The government of Cassiopeia believes that mining of the Mountains will open up vast opportunities for the people of Cassiopeia and provide the cash starved third world nation much needed revenue. The mining and related industries will create an estimated 5,000 direct new jobs, in addition to providing a tremendous boost to the economy of the province. The mining is however resisted by local and international environmental groups and the indigenous Florence Tribe, which resides in the foothills of Mount Knopfler (the talest mountain of the Underwood Chain and the richest in mineral deposit) and considers the Mountain a sacred site. According to their belief the Mount is the site where first avatar of their god descended on earth to create humans, and will be the site of incarnation of the last avatar of god before the Final Day. The environmental damage to the range as a result of mining activities will result in the destruction of large swaths of the forest in the range, death of animals who reside in the range, and more seriously it will put at risk Dexys, an endangered species of parrots, native to the Underwood Mountain range. There is also a risk of contamination of the River Tchaikovsky, which has its origins in the range, as a result of mining activities. The Florence Tribe would have to relocate to another area, and if the Tribe does not voluntary move it will be moved forcibly. The government has promised to keep the environmental damage to a minimum. It has also promised that it will try to compensate, though not fully, for the destroyed forest by planting trees in other parts of the country. Additionally it has promised that every effort will be taken to ensure the survival of Dexys. Part of the money generated from the project will be used in the conservation efforts for the Dexys, and a new department has already been created for the protection of the environment and animals affected by the project, which has been named the Underwood Conservation Department. One of the most important roles of the Department in addition to the protection of Dexys will be to ensure that River Tchaikovsky is not polluted. The government has promised to compensate the Florence Tribe for the land that is being compulsorily acquired from them, by paying them an above market rate for the land, compensating them for the inconvenience of relocation, and by relocating them to a new town, which will have all the amenities of a modern city, something they do not have at their current town Dire Straits, at the foothills of Mount Knopfler. If you were given the power to decide whether the mining should take place, what would you decide and which reasons and factors will inform your decision.
