I think notifying staff members of an emergency is important, most companies have different starting times for different divisions, or some companies have employees that telework certain days of the week. So, it is important to be able to communicate with your employees, early communication may save some employees from coming to the disaster area and you can send them to the secondary location to get things going. A great resource for communication is a mass communication notification system, you can have the system preloaded with alerts to send out. It could be for a natural disaster or an active shooter, lockdowns or evacuations. A good one is informacast, both administrators of the system and employees can send notifications so employees can notify employers if they are safe. That is important, some mass notification systems only send out messages and don't allow employees to send messages back
