The Volkswagen emissions scandal, which goes by the name Dieselgate is an example of greenwashing. Here, Volkswagen went to the woods of marketing where they sold diesel vehicles to the public deeming it as environmentally friendly and a low emission car since people had become sensitive to environmental impact (Edwards, 2024). The firm argued that its automobiles are environmentally friendly and support 'clean diesel' technology. But only it emerged that to cut on its losses the car maker fitted 11 million cars globally with a cheating device to avoid emission tests (Edwards, 2024). When the vehicles were being tried in test labs, they looked to conform to certain standards of environmental concern but on road usage they were emitting up to 40 times as many toxic fumes (Edwards, 2024). This is greenwashing since Volkswagen developed a marketing story of its diesel cars as environmentally friendly without meeting the promise that it made. Consumers were led to assume that they were buying cars that had less impact on the environment when in fact the cars were actually contributing a lot to environmental destruction (Edwards, 2024). Frankly, as the CEO of this company, I would never have approved this ad campaign. It is important to sell eco-products in the present market, but misguiding the buyer disappoints them and that is risky for the building of a loyal consumer base (Edwards, 2024). The act of greenwashing, as an attempt to attain short term organizational gains could cost a firm legal consequence, its reputation and credibility, and the customer's confidence on its products (Edwards, 2024). However, I would concentrate on realistic sustainability policies to guarantee that what the firm is selling and what is in the marketing information correlates with environmentally friendly products and processes.
