The assignment requires that you select an organisation to which you will have access to. Use the organisation as the point of departure to map out all the components and role-players in the entire value chain. NB. Dont select a large organisation, such as a mining house. This will make this assignment too complex. Select a part of the organisation (such as a specific business unit) for your description and analysis. You need to demonstrate your ability to apply the concepts in a practical setting not rescue the world! The components that should be included in the analysis will include all components of the value chain. Inside the organisation, you will consider all the support activities as well as your own operations (the engine room of your products and services). Role players for each component will include the actual role players that are part of the value delivery process from order initiation to after care service. NB. You should be specific to what value is added to the value chain through the action/activity of each role player. This is a big enough challenge. The real challenge is for you to argue which component (or role player) is the weakest link in this network. You should not only mention this weak link but support your answer with well-structured arguments on why you hold this opinion. It must be clear from your arguments/motivations what causes the weakest link. If you are able to identify this cause, chances are that you have successfully identified the CORE PROBLEM in the value chain system. The acid test is - if you get rid of this weakest link/core problem, will all/most other problems in the system be dealt with automatically? Your arguments should be strong enough to provide evidence that the areas identified are indeed critical shortcomings in the value chain. You should be clear on Why?
