The biggest influencer in obesity is an individual's lifestyle choices. Obesity is viewed as preventable (Edberg, 2020). There are many factors that play a role in a person's health, but I will make the argument that it mostly lies with the individual making better choices. We cannot change our genetic makeup, but we can make lifestyle choices to improve our own health. Following structured diets and exercise, an individual can make a big impact on obesity. Public health includes educating the public on obesity factors and how to stay healthy. By educating the population, people will default to better choices. We can implement policies and provide different programs to achieve a healthier lifestyle, but the individual needs to decide that a healthier lifestyle is what he or she wants to achieve. Without commitment to a goal, there will be no progress in the reduction of our high obesity rate. Communities also try to build an environment that is safe and has access to outdoor spaces to encourage its residents to get outside and play. This promotes a healthier lifestyle as it is often not regarded as exercise. An individual's choices are impacted by many factors including social and cultural norms. Media displays an image of what healthy should look like, but at the same time we try to encourage acceptance of diversity. People come in all shapes and sizes. At what point is their status considered unhealthy?
