The city began assessing defects through modeling and master planning efforts. To address systems weaknesses, including system age and plan for much-needed infrastructure improvements, the city of Framingham began working with BETA Group, Inc. on a water system master planning. You as the main design engineer at BETA were tasked to identify system characteristics that may be contributing to the frequent breaks and to design a pipe network system to replace the current system. Specifically, you were tasked to look at the Beebe zone in the Northwest quadrant of the city. In this zone, a 0.5 ft (15 cm) diameter and 3937 ft (1200 m) long main pipe supplies water from one reservoir to (6) industrial companies within an industrial complex. The water surface elevation of the reservoir is 262.5 ft (80 m). The city has provided you with information on the positions of the companies as shown in Figure 1. The pipe lengths between the companies and junction 1 and 2 are also shown in Figure 1. Junction 1 and Junction 2 are at elevation 26.25 ft (8 m) and 16.4 ft (5 m), respectively.Companies heights and estimated water demands are shown in Table 1. The material to be used for the 3937 ft (1200 m) water main pipe extending from the reservoir to Junction J1 to maintain a minimum pressure of 210 kPa at Junction 1(using both the EPANET and your own hand calculations).
