The course projects will require you to conduct analyses, answer questions, create tables/figures, and provide a
written report. You will use the real-world dataset to complete each project. As a reminder, the projects are
worth 250 points, determined by your average performance on all three projects.
Project #1: Descriptive Statistics
Submit final draft of Project 1 by 2/14 at 4:30pm ET (start of class) using Canvas
Background: Your HR manager needs a report on the results of the most recent engagement survey. You
will compute the appropriate descriptive statistics to help your manager report to senior leaders about
potential workplace issues.
Your submission: First, write an executive summary (1-page single-spaced maximum) for your HR
Manager that addresses the questions below. Second, create an appendix of tables and figures summarizing
the results.
As a reminder, all submissions will be evaluated for plagiarism (i.e., your submission will be compared not
only with current classmates but also with classes in previous semesters)
Make sure your executive summary addresses the following questions:
1. What are the characteristics of our employees?
2. What were the overall results of our engagement survey?
3. What did our engagement survey reveal in terms of strengths and weaknesses for the company? (note,
this will come from your evaluation of the descriptive statistics for the engagement items)
4. What are some potential solutions to improve engagement?
(hint: Each of these 4 questions can be the focus of 4 separate paragraphs in your executive summary)
Steps to complete Project 1:
First, summarize the characteristics of all current employees (Use variables with _EE for demographics).
1. Compute the appropriate measures of central tendency and variability for (a) sex, (b) age, (c)
race/ethnicity,(d) education level, (e) part-time/full-time status, and (f) organizational tenure (i.e., how
long an EE has been with the company). These six demographics must be included.
o Create one table (labeled Table 1) that reports the appropriate central tendency and variability
results for these demographic variables. (Note, you will not earn full credit if you report an
inappropriate central tendency or variability measure for a variable)
o Discuss your results and interpretations in your executive summary.
o Create a figure or chart to illustrate each demographic variable (i.e., youll need a minimum of 6
figures/charts). ALL tables and figures should be placed AFTER the executive summary and
labeled with the header Appendix).
