The difference between managing change and leading change is transactional compared to transformational. A manager can manage change, and not question anything about the processes or have any input for solutions. They are like a driver for the person who designed the car. Change leaders come up with innovative solutions, while a change manager makes sure that the changes are adhered to. Without effective change managers, it would be hard for a change leader's vision to ever materialize. A change leader can have a very rewarding job when it is going well, and a very lonely job when it is not. With great risk comes great reward! It is hard for change leaders to implement their own changes since they are just one person. They will have to rely on change managers. There will also be a level of internal resistance to overcome. Change leaders can implement changes that will be improve work quality of life from the top of the organization, to the bottom. Changes can increase sales, that in turn boost revenues, and create new job opportunities that otherwise were not available. Another change leadership advantage is the satisfaction in the changes made (boost in company morale).
