Post one real-world, two-step word problem appropriate for a Grade 6 student (numbers within 1,000). Ensure that each step represents a different mathematical situation and a different operation. Represent your problem using situation and solution equations, and solve the problem.

Then,repurposethe same numbers and information in your two-step problem into a new two-step problem that omits an intermediate step.

The problem i created reads " The local library contains 4 different floors with various books of all genres. Each floor houses 1,200 books. The neighboring town's library is much smaller and houses 1,500 less books than our local library. How many books does the neighboring library hold?

How can I repurpose the same numbers from the previous problem to make a new two-step problem that omits an intermediate step?

EXAMPLE:

Seven people live at Ben's house. There are 8 books in Ben's kitchen and 6 times as many books in the living room. How many books per person do Ben's family members have?

The difficulty can be increased by omitting an intermediate step. Consider the following problem:

Ben's family owns 56 books, and 7 people live at his house. Emily's family owns 36 books, and 6 people live at her house. How many more books per person do Ben's family members have than Emily's family members?

The missing intermediate step is the answer to the question "At each household, how many books are there per person?"
