The ELA and History teachers made a list of books that could be found in their classroom
Question:
The ELA and History teachers made a list of books that could be found in their classroom and library that have something to do with history. The students must choose an AR book on that list, read it, take an AR test, and do an assignment over the book. (There are more in-depth details and requirements to this - ((For example: it can't be fiction)); however, the point is that they have made an effort to integrate Social Studies into Reading with the use of Children's Literature.) The integration of children's literature in social studies has increased the students' interest and comprehension of history/social studies.
Using Children's Literature in Social Studies to supplement textbooks or to even use as the primary source of teaching has shown numerous benefits to students' learning. James Shiveley and Ronald Helms are writers of the dictation "Using Children's Literature to Teach the Social Studies Ohio Academic Standards." Throughout this book, Shiveley and Helms, "help teachers move along a continuum toward using interesting fiction and non-fiction narratives that help students learn more social studies content, retain it longer, and transfer it to new settings."
Throughout this dissertation, Shiveley and Helms, list multiple books that can be used to teach social studies standards (in Ohio.) I realize that this is in Ohio, not in Kansas (or your specific state that you're in), but it is still relevant in your every day life as an aspiring teacher.
You're assignment for Module 10 is as follows:
1. You are in charge of choosing a book (from Shiveley and Helms list) and telling me exactly how you would implement that book into a second grade social studies lesson plan. I expect to see the book that you choose & at LEAST 7 sentences explaining to me how you would use this in a social studies lesson.
3. List the standard that you would use for the lesson with the book that you chose using Michigan standards - so on and so forth.
4. The book - "If You Lived at the Time of the Civil War" by Kay Moore - read what Shiveley and Helms have to say about this book (pg. 27). Next, explain to me how you would implement this book at the introduction of a lesson, but ALSO as an exit ticket.
5. As mentioned above, the History and ELA teachers at my current school district have an AR History Requirement for all 7th and 8th grade students. Say that you ONLY know that the only requirement is that they have to choose a social studies book and take an AR test on it. How would you make this requirement more engaging in your own classroom?
