The environment aspects represent major concerns to the public and to the engineers, and it will continue to be more of a concern in the years to come. One of the main issues associated with the environmental protection is recycling of metals and plastics. As the consumption of pop drinks bottled in Al cans is very significant (about 200 trillion cans per year), the means to simplify the recycling process is of great importance to the public. Many users do not recycle due to the large volume occupied by the empty cans. You have to sketch and provide dimensions of your original design of a personal device for manual crushing of the empty pop cans. One regular size empty can will weigh about 13 g and is 2.13 in in diameter and 4.83 in in height. The necessary force to crush such an empty can is about 25 lbs (12 kgf). The comfortable force applied by an average person by the pull-down motion of the arm exerting a regular effort is of about 10 lbs., within little displacement space. The device designed should be safe, would be affordable and should occupy a small space on the desk or installed on the wall. The extraction of the crushed can should be safe with no possibility that the operator gets hurt. Part A: Draw the sketch of your concept of such equipment and add sizes and the eventual calculations of the transmitted force, for an example. Use instruments to draw the long lines and circles. Try to produce a neat and clear sketch as the main criterion of marking is communication of concepts through clear graphical representation. Part B: On another page, represent one component to your choice that needs to be fabricated (not a standard component) as a complete working drawing. Select the necessary views and carry the correct dimensioning of the selected part. It is advisable to select for drawing the most complex component. Try to dimension the working drawing of your selected component with most suitable sizes.
