The following are some of the relations transformed from the ER diagram for the Retail Business Management System (some adjustments are made to the tables as noted below): Employees(eid, name, address, telephone#, email, p_start_date, p_end_date) /* start_date is moved to Clerks and Managers to allow the specification of the functional dependency involving start_date and hourly_rate) */ Clerks(eid, hours, start_date, hourly_rate, over_time_rate) Managers(eid, start_date, salary, prom_date) Products(pid, name, qoh, qoh_threshold, orig_price, description, discnt_category, discnt_rate, discnt_start_date, discnt_days) Suppliers(sid, name, city, phone#, email) Supply(sup#, sid, pid, date, quantity) Customers(cid, first_name, last_name, address, phone#, visits_made, last_visit_date) Purchases (pur#, eid, pid, cid, pur_time, quantity, unit_price, payment, saving) Do the following for each relation schema: identify all non-trivial functional dependencies based on the Requirements Document (but take into consideration that sup# has been added as the primary key for Supply and pur# has been added as the primary key for Purchases). [If Y is a subset of X, then X Y is a trivial FD. Examples of trivial FDs include: A A, AB B, ABC AB.] Don't make other assumptions about the data. Use the union rule to combine the functional dependencies as much as possible to avoid having multiple functional dependencies with the same left-hand side but different right-hand side. Furthermore, try not to list redundant FDs. For example, if you already have A BC, you don't need to also list A B and A C. As another example, if you already have A B and B C, you don't need to include A C. But you are not required to eliminate all redundant FDs at this time.
