Sandra Singer was a $21-$year$-$old junior majoring in voice music at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Although Sandra was the first in her family to study music, her interest came partly from a longtime friend of her parents, Carly, who has been a professional opera singer and voice coach living in New York City. Sandra talked this over with her parents and decided to go to New York $($Manhattan$)$ even though she would incur the cost of a place to live rather than living at no charge at her parents' house in Denver over the summer, and she would give up the summer job that she would have had at a nearby country club where she had worked the previous two summers.
