The following fact pattern pertains to Question #11 through Question #15:
Sandra Singer was a 21-year-old junior majoring in voice music at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Although Sandra was the first in her family to study music, her interest came partly from a longtime friend of her parents, Carly, who has been a professional opera singer and voice coach living in New York City. In January 2020, Sandra's parents visited Carly in New York. During the course of that visit, Carly offered to give Sandra some voice coaching at no charge during the upcoming (2020) summer. Sandra's parents told Sandra about this and told Sandra to expect to hear from Carly. In early February 2020, Sandra received the following email from Carly:
"Hi Sandra! It was so fun to visit with your parents last month. I am sure that they told you about this, but if you can get to New York this coming summer, I am happy to give you some free voice lessons. I normally charge $250 an hour, but I'll give you 3 twohour lessons each week for ten weeks starting the week of May 20,2020. You'll have to find a place to live, because our place in Manhattan, where l'll provide the lessons, is too small for you to stay with us. I am happy to do this for you because your family and mine have done so much for each other over the years, and I won't be very busy during those weeks. Let me know if this works for you."
Sandra talked this over with her parents and decided to go to New York (Manhattan) even though she would incur the cost of a place to live rather than living at no charge at her parents' house in Denver over the summer, and she would give up the summer job that she would have had at a nearby country club where she had worked the previous two summers.
Sandra looked on various websites such as Craigslist and Airbnb and located a place in Manhattan at a (relatively) reasonable rent for 3 months from mid-May to MidAugust. In order to get the least expensive rent option, Sandra had to pay all three months in advance (nonrefundable), which she did on March 1,2020. Sandra bought some new clothes and a one-way airline ticket to New York for May 16,2020(and would be purchasing her return ticket later).
Sandra went to New York on May 16,2020 and moved into the apartment in Manhattan. She immediately started searching for a short term and/or part time job, without success. The week of May 20,2020 she got together with Carly for 3 two-hour voice lessons, but after the last lesson that week, Carly said that she had changed her mind and would not be able to give Sandra the lessons for the other nine weeks.
