The information is important for students to know and understand because it allow them to be able to look at data and understand it and be able to collect it into categories and compare these categories. There will certainly be a time when they need to have a record of the number of something, whether it be keeping the score of a game, recording how many times something was done, the number of a certain object, etc. and this allows students to know how to do that.
