Question:
The mayor of a city would like to decrease air pollution in a large urban area. Your consulting company has been engaged by the mayor to address this problem. You are the product management consultant on the project. Describe a solution concept to address the problem. Note that the solution that you propose in this homework could play a role in addressing only a small part of the problem, not necessarily the entire problem.
For example, measuring pollution in the urban area is a requirement (problem to be solved) before pollution can be effectively addressed. Therefore, one could propose a solution to address just the problem of measurement. An example of an innovative solution developed by a recent start-up, identified by your company, is to fit a compact measuring device in many of the cabs plying the urban area and collecting the measurement data periodically and processing the data centrally so that time-of-the-day by location information for pollution measurement can be obtained, which can then be utilized by other parts of an overall solution (beyond the scope of this start-up) to address the problem of pollution mitigation.
You are asked to think of other such solutions to address the overall pollution mitigation problem. You may also suggest another solution to the measurement problem described above. You may conduct some research on the internet to explore this problem area to develop your ideas. Any solution you propose does not have to be a new solution; in other words, it can be an existing solution.
Describe your one solution idea using the following artifacts: 1. What is the specific problem being addressed? (Answer in a few sentences) 2. Who is the customer for this solution? What would be a few considerations ("Customer Requirements") for the solution? (List at least four) 3. What is the solution concept? (Answer in a few sentences) 4. Draw a Context Diagram. Show at least five entities that the solution system interacts with. For each interacting entity, show the information that flows between the entity and the solution system. 5. Draw a Product Life Cycle Diagram for the solution system. List two activities for each life cycle stage. 6. Draw the System Life Cycle Diagram for the engineered system that would develop and produce the solution system. List two activities for each life cycle stage.
