The mill is very concerned about the environment Rather than minimizing the production cost the mill wants
Question:
(1) The mill wants to know how many rolls (14ft and 21ft) they should produce, and how these should be cut to fulfil demand at minimum cost. Any leftovers after cutting 14ft and 21ft wide rolls are thrown away. Formulate this cutting problem as a linear programme. Your answer should include: a brief introduction to the problem; the definition of the decision variables (with clear explanation); the description of the objective function and the description of the constraints (with clear explanation). This part is completely independent of Excel!
(2) Enter your model into Excel and find the optimal solution with Solver. Discuss briefly the optimal solution (cost?, number of rolls?, how are these cut? how much waste is generated?) A copy of the model’s setup in Excel and the Solver sensitivity report must come in Appendix to your report.
(3) The mill is very concerned about the environment. Rather than minimizing the production cost, the mill wants to find the cheapest production plan that first minimizes waste and any potential overproduction. Modify your model from part (1) to include the above conditions (explain your modifications); solve it through Solver and discuss your new production plan.
Please submit your report before the due date (Thursday 15th December 2022, 3pm) electronically through Moodle. Your report should be submitted as a word or pdf document (do not submit Excel files). Note that this is an individual assignment and that you have to write up your report individually. References are not required for this coursework. You can structure the report as you wish but make sure that you answer the 3 questions. Write your report concisely but add explanation for those parts/sections that need explanation.
