The Pinto and Corvair case studies each explore how major corporate enterprises actually make decisions. Each one has been highlighted in the business ethics literature as a classic case study in how not to make decisions. Neither company is seen to be exhibiting good CSR. I dont think that is a fair assessment. When you look at the brain processes that drive each decision, I think it is easy to see how similar decision can be made anytime, anywhere, by any company. Im not sure that they were even the wrong decisions. Certainly, in the Ford Motor Company case, I believe they made the correct decision for the time and it is the emotional responses of the critics that is the problem.

Your task is to look at the Ford Pinto case study and think about it. Do additional research if you wish. Then think about your own feelings. What leads you to judge the case in any specific way? What moral senses are you using? Familial? Hierarchical? Equitable? Tactical? Strategic? Aesthetic? Transcendent? How do your feelings relate to the way you make decisions according to your Adaptive Management Report? What evidence leads you to think your emotional reaction is a reasonable reaction? Then conclude, if this was bad CSR, what made it bad?
