A shaft whose material is not known operates in a mission critical machine. To
evaluate the operational mechanical reliability of the shaft, its material must be
identified. Thus, scientific determination of the shaft's key material properties is
requested. Fig. 1 shows a picture of the shaft.

The Tasks
You are required to carry out an engineering analysis on the shaft. This will require
you to select and apply appropriate computational and analytical techniques to model
the complex response of the shaft to increasing torsional loads whilst recognising the
limitations of this technique.
In addition, you will need to deploy engineering practice which requires you to use
practical laboratory and workshop skills to carry out torsional loading and microscopic
examination of the microstructure of the shaft.
You are advised that selection and application of appropriate equipment in the IC0.38
and IC0.42 laboratories, as well as implementation of suitable engineering
technologies and processes will support you to obtain the parameters needed to
complete the engineering analysis task. It will also enable you to acquire some useful
information on the composition of the microstructure of the material. It is expected
that you recognise the limitations of these tasks too.
Based on the findings of the two designed experiments and application of your
previous knowledge on mechanics of solid materials as well as material properties in
general, you are required to draw conclusions and advise on what the material of the
shaft is.
