The question I have raised in this week's notes asks us to differentiate between what is a universal unconscious behavior, tied somehow to evolution, and what are culture-bound non-verbal meanings, just like the differences in languages, that can only be accurately "read" by someone fluent in the culture. In other words, what of this data and claims of what is non-verbally communicated finds basis in what we all can understand, and how much is only by one group? That is the starting point for this exercise in reflection on how we all communicate, and how much of it is in awareness. Culture left unconscious cannot change. Self-awareness is the first step to understanding others, and other cultures, ways of being and communicating. And what attitudes must we cultivate to maximize our PQ? What do you think of the suggestion that learning to communicate and lead across lines of culture requires self-analysis and an increase in self-awareness from or norm--that we study non-verbal communication--in others but also in ourselves--to gain this goal? Be specific.
