Question:
- The second writing task can be either a compare/contrast paper or a cause/effect paper. students can choose either one. i prefer that the topic for either of these types of papers not be about personal interests or personal experiences, but rather be about issues of national interest or public interest.( of course, students may use personal experiences as one of their examples when providing facts or evidence to support their point of view). here are a few examples of topics that are of national or public interest. for a cause/effect paper, ask questions such as: “what caused the price of oil to drop and what are its effects?” “what causes the zika virus and what are its effects?” “what is the cause of a sparse acorn crop and what are its effects?” “what causes police brutality and what are its effects? in a compare/contrast paper you are comparing one thing to another. for example, here is a list of compare/contrast topics that might interest you as a writer or inspire you to think up your own odd but interesting comparisons. compare: the iphone to the samsung galaxy denver’s quarterback to arizona’s for the super bowl gracie gold to ashley wagner for the world skating title which has the least impact on the environment: fracking for oil or constructing an oil pipeline? police work with and without body cameras and videos. in the "file" section of canvas, there are several helpful handouts and powerpoints on how to construct a cause/effect paper or a compare/contrast paper including one with a venn diagram and one with sample ny times articles. the compare/contrast or cause-effect paper should be three to four pages, double spaced and typed in 12 pt times roman font. peer review of draft paper is 2/09.the final paper is due on 2/16. if students use outside sources, please document those sources using mla in-text citation. i will not require a works cited page until students begin the research paper.
