Throughout MCOM14, weve talked about what makes for effective ad design - from copy, to
design hierarchy, layout, and calls to action.
You must now analyse ads based on what youve learned.
Your analysis must include at least 2 ads, of 2 different types. For example, you can select
one print ad and 1 video ad. Or 1 digital ad and 1 audio ad.
Ideally your selected ads are from the same campaign so that you can compare consistency
and effectiveness across mediums, however, I recognize this may be difficult to find, so you
may use ads from different campaigns if necessary (they should still be from the same
brand, however).
Answer the questions below that are relevant to the types of ads youve chosen.
Answer the following questions to analyze your chosen ad. You must include an image of
the ad and/or a link to the ads in your submission.
Print Ad Questions
1. What caught your attention in the ads? Explain.
2. What kind of headline was used in the ads? Did the headline achieve its purpose of
grabbing your attention? (Why/Why not?)
3. How did the body copy enhance the ad? Explain.
4. Was a slogan or tagline used? If not, suggest one. Then, explain how the
slogan/tagline is used effectively.
Digital Ad Questions
1. What caught your attention in the ad? Explain.
2. What kind of copy was used in the digital ads? Primarily promotional or content? Do
the ads relate to the target audience of the product? (Why/Why not?)
3. Do the website and ads complement each other? If yes, how? If not, how can they be
more cohesive with one another?
Audio Ad Questions
1. What caught your attention in the ad? Explain.
2. What kind of creative device was used in this ad? Did the creative device achieve its
purpose of grabbing your attention? (Why/Why not?)
3. Was a slogan or tagline used? If not, suggest one. Then, explain how the
slogan/tagline is used effectively.
Video Ad Questions
1. How did the opening (first 5-10 seconds) catch your attention or state a problem?
Explain.
2. How did the middle of the video ad provide solutions to the problem or explain
features and benefits? Explain.
3. How did the close of the video ad create a memorable note or call to action? Explain.
