The term Lean is often associated with Toyota. Lean is used to describe the Toyota Production System created by John Krafcik. The term lean was used to describe the attributes of what the Toyota system was designed to accomplish; reduction of non-value adding activities. While Lean has its origins in Japan, Six Sigma originated in the US in the 1980s. Motorolas leadership at the time looking to compete with foreign competitors, created the term. Due to successful improvement measures, many companies across the country began to follow the implementation of this process across different kinds of businesses and not just in manufacturing. Lean/Six Sigma is not uniquely a Japanese philosophy but has been applicable universally. Toyota has been successful in implementing Lean because of their view of Lean as a comprehensive philosophy. Toyota strives to implement Lean in every level of the organization and involve every worker. Through consistent use of Lean as a way of thinking, Toyotas success in implementing lean has appealed to other organizations and industries. At my current organization, Lean is not used in a formal approach but rather a way to solve an issue. I do see an opportunity to use Lean/Six Sigma to improve efficiency.
