The two rules for formatting in APA format that I find challenging are learning all the different reference styles and the mechanics of style. They aren't difficult to understand, just challenging because I want to ensure accuracy in presenting information. The biggest challenge with reference styles is that there are so many different formats such as textual works, data and assessments, audiovisual media, and online media. It is crucial to include all pertinent information in each reference to cite sources and properly acknowledge the credibility of the writer. The biggest challenge with the mechanics of style that I have is punctuation, italics, and quotation marks. Even though using proper punctuation is a part of learning in early grade school, it is crucial to know where to place colons, semi-colons, and brackets, and why you are using them. It is confusing for me to distinguish when it is needed for italics versus quotation marks. While italics are mainly used to attract the reader's attention to certain words, the font also plays an enormous part in distinguishing the titles and names of movies or novels (Ellis, 2022). I plan to learn the APA format by just working at it continuously and hope it gets easier the more I use it.
