There are a few issues that should be addressed when considering adding cameras into the workplace to monitor employee activity. The most obvious issue would be the employers trust in the team. The sudden introduction of cameras can be viewed as intrusive or that there is doubt about the employee$$s integrity. Trust is important between employees and employers because it helps to foster a positive and productive work environment and the cameras can threaten that.

Another issue to consider would be the breadth of the addition, i$.$e$.$ how expansive will the area be that we are adding the cameras. Should the cameras only cover the merchandise, or should it extend to exits and other entry points? Without covering areas that have a reasonable expectation of privacy, how far do we need to monitor.

I would also consider the cost benefit of adding a new security system and the maintenance of it$.$ Monitoring and maintaining a new system could be the cost of adding a whole new employee to staff and could still have means of avoidance. Would it be less expensive to revamp my hiring process to weed out bad actors before theft can become an issue?

Ultimately, as the manager I would use cameras in the workplace. Cameras can provide a financial safety in a couple of different ways. Besides protecting the company$$s profits by discouraging theft, they can also be useful in combatting legal issues.
