There are several ways to structure guided learning activities. One example of a guided learning activity is role-playing. The group facilitator (who is usually an SLP or audiologist) can break up the participants into smaller groups, and each group will write a role-play that demonstrates a communication breakdown and a repair. The small group then performs the role-play for the larger group, and the audience will identify the communication breakdown and the type of strategy used to repair it. For this assignment, you will write a role-play between two people, one who has hearing loss and one that does not, which demonstrates a communication breakdown and the use of a repair strategy. The role play should be at least 10 lines; around 5 for the PHL and 5 for the CP. The communication breakdown should occur because the PHL does not understand part of the conversation. The PHL should then be the one to use a repair strategy. While you will learn about ways that CPs can repair communication breakdown, most of the time, the burden will be on the PHL for identifying and repairing communication breakdown.
