There are three types of qualitative research. Phenomenological research helps explain and understand the meaning of lived experiences. It focuses on particular phenomena of life using interviews and conversations to collect data from mostly small sample sizes (Green & Johnson, 2018). Phenomenological research studies are geared toward the study of the experience from the perspective of the individual. Ethnographic research is used to study the cultural behaviors of certain groups and the reasons behind why certain behaviors exist. It focuses on the environment by using observation as a tool. Grounded theory has the aim of figuring out or explaining why something or phenomena is occurring. The researcher is trying to develop a theory as to why something is occurring. A few similarities between phenomenological and ethnographic research are that they both are qualitative in nature and can use interviews as a form of data collection. The differences between phenomenological and ethnographic research is that phenomenological research studies the subjective, lived experiences of a certain individual based on that individuals thoughts and feelings or perspectives. Ethnographic research is the systematic study of people and cultures to better understand behaviors and attitudes. While they both can use interviews as a form of data collection, ethnographic studies also use observations, researching documents and other environmental facts.
