There are two options for data you need in this assignment:

You can research and collect necessary data from real company.

You can make assumptions of data such as the data needed in HOQ, the demand for the product, lead time, initial inventory etc.

For this assignment you are required to:

Develop a product/service. You should first critically review the processes needed to develop a product by identifying the customer needs, defining the appropriate level of product/service quality, and considering the other perspectives, i.e., liability issues, ethical considerations, sustainability issues, costs and profits. Apply Kano model to classify the quality of your product/service. Then develop the house of quality for your product/service with clear explanation.

Define the Bill of Material and develop the MRP for the proposed product/service.

Define the inventory ordering policies for all components in the bill of material. Estimate necessary data like lead time for your calculation. Cover the issues of order size, reordering point, safety stock.

Investigate top two challenges and discuss directions that relate to operations management of your product/service to effectively and efficiently manage it.

Example:

You are planning to open a bottling plant and sell water bottles to RMIT students. After the product design stage, you decide to sell the water bottles which are cheaper than other brands in the market like Evian, Alpha, Mount Franklin or Pump with funny design that attracts young people. The bill of material includes water, labels and plastic bottle and you forecast that the demand is 10,000 bottles per month. You then search for cheap suppliers of those components, obtain the data and start the plan for MRP and inventory management. How should your product design and/or production plan and/or inventory management policies be adapted to deal with this challenge?

Important note: Please do not use above product or similar products such as drink bottle, reusable bottle etc. for your assignment.

1. Product/Service design: comprehensive understanding of product/service design theories and ability to apply it in manufacturing/service sectors. Give the reader some background on your product such as how it works, the purpose of that, similar product in the market, why another product or service is needed, etc.	3
2. A complete Kano model with explanation. Between 3-4 attributes for each category in Kano model should be identified.	7.5
3. A complete House of quality. Please note: You need to explain different parts of your HOQ You can use HOQ template uploaded on Canvas The first HOQ would suffice Between 4-5 customer needs should be identified Between 4-5 product attributes should be identified	7.5
4. Inventory management: The comprehensiveness of the data analyses for inventory management. Cover the issues of order size, reordering point, service level and safety stock. You can use hypothetical data.	8
5. Material requirements planning: Describe the inputs, outputs, and the nature of MRP processing; explain how requirements in a master production schedule are translated into material requirements and perform analysis of MRP. In preparing MRP make sure that you use the data and the analysis you did in Criterion 4.	10
6. Recommendation/Discussion: This criterion has two subsections:
6a: Discuss about two important challenges you face in producing what you have designed. What do you suggest to tackle these two challenges?	5
6b: How the design of your product/service can be impacted by government regulation? Give an example.	3
7. The overall presentation of the assignment: Clarity of presentation and the sequence of the topics, Executive Summary, Introduction, Table of content, List of Figures/ Tables, Conclusions, Citation (Harvard style), Page numbering, Cover sheet, Appendix (if any), Compliance with the word limit and Quality of references.	6

Please note that it is important that you explain all assumptions and analysis in layman's terms.

In completing this assignment, you need to employ a realistic approach in the whole process of developing your product or service. e.g., the extent your product and processes you suggest in your report are applicable in reality. Try to be realistic when assuming the data for your calculation.

As you have noticed each individual criterion in this assignment has been already discussed in separate weeks in this course. It is recommended that you revisit the lecture and tutorials for each requirement of this assignment. For example, the first step in your assignment is to choose a product or service you want to design and then develop HOQ and Kano model. These topics are discussed in week 3 in details. Please do the same for the rest of requirements.

There is no requirement in terms of specific number of references in this assignment. Feel free to cite sources as needed.
