Question:
There are two parts to this exercise, part 1 and part 2. You and your team will complete both parts in the same session. As usual, a facilitator from the group needs to collect the results and submit to instructor - please use the same facilitator for both parts!
PART 1
Review the Common Management Styles presentation and the management styles discussed. Each student will declare his or her management style to others in your group, and provide some examples on where it worked well and were it may have been better to use, or have applied, a different style. Report the self-declared style of each member of the team - remember, there is no right or wrong management style!
PART 2
Although project risk typically focuses on technical issues, team dynamics and "people issues" often pose additional risks to success. Sometimes, there is no easy answer that will optimize the social landscape of every project, and tough decisions by the PM may be necessary to maintain order.
Suppose you are serving as a project manager for a complex project. Carefully review each statement in the list A->H below, as if each one were a topic or issue that came up during the project that you were leading.
As PM you must make decisions on each - describe your views on each, showing your thought leadership in these areas - which can be easily seen as controversial. Although it's possible that there are no right or wrong answers, since by definition each project is a unique endeavor, provide your response in a manner that demonstrates your ability to take a stand and make tough decisions!
A. A deadline is a deadline - it has to be met, regardless of what it takes.
B. If a team member is consistently underperforming, the team should have the right to remove that person by private vote.
C. Giving gifts is a useful way to show respect to key stakeholders or to the project sponsor when they make important contributions.
D. Humor can help to develop good relationships in the workplace.
E. Shouting or physical finger-waving should be avoided on the job.
F. As a project manager or team leader, it's never acceptable to employ your relatives.
G. Some project-related decisions can be made without consulting everyone on the team, even though it impacts everyone.
H. If a team has a heavy workload which requires many hours beyond a normal 40-hour work week to meet deadlines, then vacation days and time off should not be approved, because after all, how can we afford time off if the work is not even getting done in a normal work week?
